Chapter 15. Smart Plug-Ins

Smart Plug-Ins (SPIs) are software solutions that integrate out-of-the-box components into the OpenView platform. The components provide instant-on management of application and device availability within the domain. SPIs provide pre-configured templates, message groups, application groups, node groups and instrumentation for different enterprise environments. The advantage is that you spend less time with detailed configuration activities, such as creating templates from scratch. Instead, you can take a pre-defined template and customize it for your need. In this chapter, the Database SPI is used for reference. The features of the SPI include:

  • Monitoring and control of enterprise resource planning, database, messaging, and management applications

  • Ready to configure out-of-the-box.

  • Automatically collect, monitor, process, alarm, and take corrective actions for most events.

  • Modular and easily integrates into the OVO platform to extend the management domain.

  • Access data from application log files, MIBs, scripts that perform data extraction, and other data sources including database tables.

One of the biggest tasks of the OV system administrator is customizing the tools and components that provide the daily operations view of the environment. The benefits of the SPI include:

  • Time savings.

  • Improved efficiency through automatically managing important aspects of enterprise applications and services.

  • Reduced training costs because multiple SPIs are easily implemented.

  • Reduced costs by eliminating redundant integration.

A large variety of SPIs is available, and more are always under development by HP and other vendors. Some of the SPIs require a license to use others are free. Visit http://openview.hp.com/products/spi/indexl for links to the complete SPI product line.

In this chapter, we discuss the general implementation details of an SPI. We also describe the components and resources provided by the SPI.
