8.5 TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF DATA COLLECTION AND EVENTS

This section is designed to help you understand the complete process of defining data collection and creating custom events. It reinforces the information provided in this and previous chapters.

Certain Hewlett-Packard printers contain SNMP variables to indicate when the printer runs out of paper. For this exercise you will need to

  • Load the printer MIB

  • Monitor the variable that identifies the paper is out

  • Popup messages when the paper runs out and after the paper has been refilled

The basic steps are as follows:

  • Load the hp-np (HP Network Printer) MIB. This MIB ships with NNM.

  • Query the

private.enterprises.hp MIB subtree to find an MIB variable that describes "Paper Out."

  • Locate an HP network printer to use for the data collection.

  • Define an event that will trigger a popup message when the paper is out. Hint: opening the paper tray on the printer gives the same result as "Paper Out".

  • If you are able to complete this exercise, you have a pretty good understanding of defining data collection and events. If you need assistance, refer to the next section of this chapter for a detailed solution to this exercise.
