Chapter 19. Enterprise Management Flexibility with Multiple Management Servers

The flexible management concept helps distribute the application, system, and network management tasks to OpenView servers enterprise-wide. The location of the servers depends on the business requirements. The model for distributed management supports locating the systems at different sites within the same city, different states, or different countries. Implementing the OpenView distributed management server architecture requires detailed planning.

Enterprise management policies are used as a basis for the development of

service level agreements (SLAs). The SLAs guide the OpenView distributed management design and implementation. When the detailed design plan is developed, the enterprise management needs become a roadmap for how the OVO agents are utilized to help meet the requirements of the SLAs. The company policies, in conjunction with the OpenView design plan, help define the operation's support plans. The support plan may centralized some operations and distribute others at the regional level.

The use of embedded notification and alert technology may include sending pager messages, forwarding messages to a trouble ticket system, or high-availability failover. When multiple management servers send and receive information over the network, a reliable high-speed transport is essential. Other considerations include time zone synchronizations if the machines are located in multiple time zones and send messages from one time zone to another.

This chapter is an overview of the flexible management features built into OVO.
