1.3 WHAT CUSTOMER VIEWS PROVIDES

NNM does an excellent job of displaying and monitoring the health of the network infrastructure. It provides a view of the physical network connectivity of an enterprise when you enable Extended Topology. What it does not do, however, is provide much of a customizable logical view. Though some customization exists within NNM,

Customer Views (CV) extends the capabilities of NNM by allowing the administrator to define a logical hierarchy comprised of five additional views. Sealey Inc. will be able to grant restricted data access to each customer by grouping together each customer's devices in a separate hierarchy. CV provides the ability to define which customers are affected by which resources, and is commonly used by Internet Service Providers, Managed Service Providers, and outsourcers to allow for customer-based management. CV provides the five additional views from the top level of NNM, including:

  • Key Resources
Network devices that are deemed critical to the management of an organization.

  • Customers
A logical grouping of devices based on ownership of equipment.

  • Devices
Network devices that include routers, switches, and servers.

  • Internet Links
Devices that are provided to the customer by an external organization such as an Internet Service Provider.

  • Sites
A logical or geographical structure within an organization such as a city, building, or business structure (accounting, engineering, and so on).

  • CV must reside on the same system as NNM. The administrator plans the hierarchy, determines the customer and resource relationships, and identifies key resources. The CV command- line utility

ovcustomer is used to define each of these components. This allows the administrator to define which systems belong to which organizations (Customers), where the systems are geographically located (Sites), and who the service providers are (Internet Links). Key Resources should be populated with the mission critical devices within an organization. Devices are automatically populated (based on SNMP responses) with network infrastructure devices such as network switches, routers, and hubs.

Sealey Inc. can configure CV to provide operators with a logical view of each customer network. This view will provide information regarding a customer by describing devices and key resources of a particular customer.
