4.3 ALARM CATEGORIES

In the upper right side of your screen you see the

Alarm Categories as shown in Figure 4-15. This window consists of two distinct parts. On the right are the (user extensible) alarm categories and on the left are color-coded indicator buttons. The indicator color is based on the most severe event in that category received by NNM.

Figure 4-15. The alarm categories have color-coded indicator buttons that reflect the most severe event in each alarm category.

4.3.1 All Alarms Browser

You can display the message browser by clicking one of the buttons in the Alarm Categories. This shows an alarms browser that lists the most recent alarms from that category. The

All Alarms category indicator button displays the

All Alarms Browser , a list of all the alarms received by NNM, shown in Figure 4-16. These alarms are usually a result of SNMP traps that have been sent as directed messages from some device on your network to NNM. An operator can use alarms to determine problems that have arisen in your enterprise. Most of the events are color-coded indicating the severity of the event. By double-clicking an event, you unveil the submap of the device that sent the event. If the event message is longer than the browser, right click on the message and you will see the entire message without having to use the scroll bar at the bottom of the browser as shown in Figure 4-16.

Figure 4-16. The All Alarms Browser lists events received by NNM. Single-click an indicator button from the Alarm Categories to access this browser. Right-click a message to see the full text of an event.

By default, NNM only color-codes events of the severity Minor, Major and Critical. Review some of the details of an event, as shown in Figure 4-16. The browser provides the severity, a timestamp, the hostname of the event, and the message. The browser is commonly used as a "to do list" for an operator. By left-clicking in the first column, you can acknowledge the event. If the event has an asterisk (

* ) in the

Cor column, you can left-click the

* to view correlated events. Another way to display correlated events is by selecting

ActionsShow Correlated Events . NNM has a built-in event correlation engine to determine whether multiple events have the same root cause and automatically adds these as child events under the parent event.

Select ActionsViews to see a list of dynamic views related to solving the type of problem indicated in the alarm. Double-click the alarm to open the

ovw submap showing the device involved.
