Shannon and Warren Weaver The Mathematical Theory of Communication is the foundational text of information theory. While much of Shannon's contribution is highly mathematical, Warren's introduction to the book details the basic tenants of the field in non-technical language. Recommended:
Some Recent Contributions to the Mathematical Theory of Communication Theories of Human Communication, by Stephen W. Littlejohn Littlejohn's volume is a textbook for communication studies, and as such provides a great deal of information at a somewhat shallow depth. That said, his explication of basic systems theory, information theory, and cybernetics provide the most lucid articulations of these complex fields that we have encountered. Recommended:
