Speeding Up Editing

When you first start using InDesign, you may be disappointed that InDesign seems slower at text editing than QuarkXPressespecially on a slower computer, or when working on a long document. InDesign can slow down because it's doing much more work than XPress: Its high-resolution previews, and improved text composition require more processing power. Fortunately, there are couple of things you can do to improve editing speed.

  • When you're editing text, turn off InDesign's High Quality Display mode: Choose Typical Display or Optimized Display from the View menu (see Chapter 66).

  • Try selecting Adobe Single-Line Composer from the Paragraph palette's menu (we describe this in Chapter 46). InDesign responds slightly faster, and it doesn't rewrap the previous lines. When you're done editing, select the text and switch back to Paragraph Composer to get better composition when you're finished.
