Tools for Selecting
The Selection tool and Direct Selection tool are both used for selecting objects on your page. The Selection tool (press V) is most like the Item tool in QuarkXPress, as you use it to select objects and their contents at the same time. For example, you can use the Selection tool to move a frame and its contents to a new location on a page. The Direct Selection tool (press A) is somewhat like the QuarkXPress content tool. You can use this tool to move the content of a picture frame, but you can also use it to select and modify individual frame points or portions of a frame. When using this tool notice that its appearance will change subtly based upon what is being selected. While these two tools may appear to be interchangable because of their similar names, using the incorrect selection tool can make your life miserable. For example, selecting a picture frame with the Direct Selection tool and then making a change in the Transform palette affects the content, but not the frame itselfwhich may or may not be what you wanted. We cover these tools in greater detail in Chapter 11 and 20.
