Applying H&J Settings

For both QuarkXPress and InDesign, H&J is controlled at the paragraph level, but the way the settings are applied differs between programs. In XPress, you create named H&J settings which are saved with the document and which you can then apply to selected paragraphs in the Paragraph Attributes dialog box. InDesign doesn't let you save H&J settings. Rather, you apply H&J settings in the following ways:

  • To apply settings to particular paragraphs, select the paragraphs and make your choices in the two dialog boxes.

  • To create default settings within a document, make choices in the Hyphenation and Justification dialog boxes with nothing selected. All subsequently created text frames will use these settings.

  • To create default settings which apply to all new documents, make the choices in these two dialog boxes with no document open.

  • The most efficient way to apply multiple H&J settings in a document is to include them in paragraph styles. All of the settings in these two dialog boxes are available when you are creating styles (see Chapter 54).
