View Menu Settings

InDesign gives you the ability to display each open window with a different display setting. To change the setting, choose from the View menu: Optimized Display, Typical Display, or High Quality Display (see Figure 66-1).

Figure 66-1. Display Quality

  • Optimized. Select this setting (or press Command-Option-O/Ctrl-Alt-O) to gray out all images and turn off transparency effectsuseful when proofing or entering copy in long documents.

  • Typical. You can choose this setting (or press Command-Option-Z/Ctrl-Alt-Z) to view images with low-resolution proxy previews similar to the way they are displayed in QuarkXPress.

  • High Quality. When you choose this setting (or press Command-Option-H/Ctrl-Alt-H) you can see your images at the same resolution they display in Photoshop and Illustrator. This is more or less "Display PostScript."

You might think that higher quality is always better. However, the High Quality display setting is calculation intensive and will slow down all but the fastest computers. If working in High Quality mode works for you, then go for it. But if you find InDesign displaying your pages very slowly, try using Typical or Optimized, or only applying the High Quality display mode to images that really need it (see below).
