Customizing Shortcuts

While many Adobe InDesign key commands will be easy for you to use, there may be others that make your work more difficult. For example, after years of importing objects in XPress using Command-E/Ctrl-E (for Get Picture), InDesign now asks you to use Command-D/Ctrl-D (for Place). In XPress, the latter command duplicates selected objects, but if you use the formerin InDesign, you open the Export dialog box. Fortunately, you can resolve this dilemma by customizing your key commands to whatever you want them to be.

The easiest way to change InDesign's keyboard shortcuts is to select a different set from the Set popup menu in the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog box. InDesign ships with one shortcut set other than its default: QuarkXPress 4.0 keyboard shortcuts. If you really like XPress's shortcuts, choose this. Suddenly, Command-E/Ctrl-E activates Place, Command-3/Ctrl-3 adds an automatic page number, and so on.

It's not hard to customize the keyboard commands further, but you do need to take some care with the Context menu. Here's what you do.

  • Select Keyboard Shortcuts from the Edit menu, then choose the Set you want to modify (or click New Set to make your own). You can alter the Default set, but we don't recommend it, as it's nice to be able to go back to the original settings.

  • Choose a subject from the Product Area popup menu, and then choose the command you want to change from the Commands portion of the window.

  • After selecting a command to be modified, InDesign displays the current keyboard shortcut in the Current Shortcuts field. You can eliminate a current shortcut (there may be more than one, each with a different context) by clicking the Remove shortcut without assigning a new shortcut.

  • If you want to add a new shortcut, first choose from the four choices in the Context popup menu: Alerts/Dialogs, Text, Default, and Tables (plus XML Selection if you have the XML plug-ins installed). This controls when the shortcut will be active. For instance, if you choose Tables, then the keyboard shortcut will only function when your text cursor is in a table.

  • Finally, click in the New Shortcut portion of the window, enter the keystroke you want, and click the Assign button. Your new shortcut should then be listed in the Current Shortcuts portion of the window. When done assigning keyboard shortcuts, click the OK button.
