Built-in or In-RIP Trapping

In InDesign, the choice of trapping is made in the Output panel of the Print dialog box (see Chapter 95), but is only available when you are printing color separations. InDesign offers two kinds of trapping from the Trapping popup menu: built-in trapping and In-RIP trapping. InDesign's built-in trapping is surprisingly good, and can handle most trapping needs. However, if your output provider has a PostScript 3 RIP which has In-RIP trapping, InDesign can support that (make sure you have the proper PPD chosen for the RIP).

InDesign's trapping engine can correctly handle trapping when objects contain multiple colors, like a gradient, when objects cross multiple colors, and even when objects overlap bitmapped images (TIFF, JPEG and PSD formats). The In-RIP trapping also adds the ability to trap colors within placed EPS, PDF, DCS, and Illustrator graphics. (However, we don't actually know anyone who uses PostScript's In-RIP trapping; most output providers rely on other trapping software instead.)
