What Are Plug-ins?

InDesign may not be able to do everything you'd want, such as the ability to easily create mathematical equations for textbook publishing, arrange pages in printers spreads for offset printing, or interact with databases. Fortunately, you can buy third-party plug-ins that add these additional capabilities.

Most people don't realize that, unlike XPress, most of the features in InDesign are actually plug-ins written by Adobe, and that the application itself is sort of a glorified plug-in manager! This underlying technology has some advantages, like the ability for Adobe to update individual features easily. Some third-party software developers are even customizing InDesign by replacing Adobe's plug-ins with their own for specific publishing needs, such as newspaper or magazine publishing.
