The Preflight Dialog BoxWhenever you want to use this feature, choose Preflight from the File menu (or press Command-Option-Shift-F/Ctrl-Alt-Shift-F). In all but the smallest and simplest documents, you'll see a progress bar as InDesign analyzes the document and prepares its report. After a moment, you'll see the Preflight dialog box, set to the Summary panel (see Figure 91-1). Problems are highlighted in the summary with a triangle warning icon. Figure 91-1. (You can also use the shortcut Command/Ctrl-Down Arrow to switch to the next panel down in the list, and Command/Ctrl-Up Arrow to switch to the next panel up.) Fonts PanelThe Fonts panel tells you about all the fonts in your document and in any linked EPS and PDF files (see Chapter 53). Figure 91-2. The Font panel of the Preflight dialog box![]() Links and Images PanelThe Links and Images panel lists the document's embedded and linked files (see Chapter 39, linked text files aren't a problem, but we prefer to embed these files. For each image, InDesign lists the file format and color space (unfortunately, the program can't detect RGB color information embedded in EPS or PDF files). In Figure 91-3, fifteen of the images are in RGByou'd better convert them to CMYK or make sure your printer knows about them. Figure 91-3. The Links and Images panel of the Preflight dialog box![]() The Update/Relink choice allows you to select an individual linked graphic that is missing or modified, and to update or relocate it without leaving the dialog box (the feature toggles its name depending on the status of the image selected). The Repair All option lets you fix all missing and modified links. (We discuss more about linked graphics in Chapter 65.) Turn on the Show Problems option to only see modified or missing links. Other Panels and OptionsThere are three other panels in the Preflight dialog box: The Colors and Inks panel shows you the inks used in your document, including inks specified in EPS or PDF files. This can be useful to identify a document where you have more spot colors than you expect; we discuss how to fix this using the Ink Manager in Chapter 95. The Print Settings panel summarizes the current settings in the Print dialog box. The External Plug-ins panel identifies any plug-ins which are required to reproduce the document (for example, if your document requires the InCopy plug-in).There are three buttons at the bottom of the Preflight dialog box. Of course, the Cancel button cancels you out of the dialog boxhowever, if you have resolved font or link problems within the Preflight dialog box, those changes are not undone. Click the Report button if you want to save a text file of what the dialog box displays. Click Package to package the document and its associated files, which we talk about in the next chapter. |
