Clicking Through the Stack QuarkXPress has a keystroke that lets you click through a stack of boxes or other items to get to the ones behind. InDesign has such a shortcut, tooin fact six of them!
- Hold down the Command/Ctrl key and click. The first click selects the top-most object, and successive clicks select objects downward below your cursor.
- Hold down the Command-Option/Ctrl-Alt keys and click. Successive clicks select objects below your cursor in an upward direction.
- You can select the bottom-most object on a page by pressing Option-Shift-Command-[/Alt-Shift-Ctrl-[ (square bracket), or the top-most object on a page by pressing Option-Shift-Command-]/Alt-Shift-Ctrl-].
- You can select next object above the currently-selected one by pressing Option-Command-]/Alt-Ctrl-] or the next object below with Option-Command-[/Ctrl-Alt-[.
Note that the last four keyboard shorcuts select objects on the page in their stacking order and not necessarily if they're visually "above" or "below" other objects. For instance, the front-most object may be sitting by itself on the page, or even on a different layer.
