Specifying the TextAfter setting the search range, type or paste the characters to be searched for in the Find What field. InDesign remembers the last 15 searches you've performed, and you can select them in the Previous Search popup menu (just to the right of the field). If you want to replace characters, type or paste the characters into the Change To field. This field also has a Previous Search menu with previous replacement characters. Special CharactersIn QuarkXPress, if you want to search for special characters like a Tab or a New Paragraph, you must remember the code to type in the Find What or Change To fields, or a keystroke. In InDesign, to search and replace these kinds of special characters, you can choose them from the Metacharacter popup menu, to the right of the Find What and Change To fields. If you're really into codes, InDesign supports those, too (see Table 52-1). Wild Card CharactersQuarkXPress has one wild card code which can stand for any character in the Find/Change command. InDesign has four of them: Any White Space Character (like a tab or space), Any Character, Any Digit, or Any Letter. These are all in the Metacharacters popup menu. As in XPress, the wild card characters can only be used in the Find What field, not in the Change To field. Other OptionsBoth QuarkXPress and InDesign have two other options when performing a Find/Change command. When you check Whole Word, the search is limited to entire words only. Turning on the Case Sensitive option is the same as turning off Ignore Case in XPress. |
