RotatingIn QuarkXPress, a frame or path can be rotated numerically in the Measurement palette or Modify dialog box, or interactively with the Rotation tool. InDesign gives you similar choicesthe Rotate tool and the Transform palette. You can also rotate with the Free Transform tool, described below. We tend to just use the Transform palette; simply enter an angle in the Rotation field, and press Enter. You can also choose from preset rotation values found in the popup menu to the right of the field. Dragging with the Rotate ToolTo drag with the Rotate tool, first set the point of transformation in the Transform palette proxy or by dragging the target icon anywhere on your page (it looks like a little crosshair that is, by default, in the center of the object). Then position the Rotate tool away from the transformation point (the further away, the more control you'll have) and drag in the direction you want the object rotated. The rotation is a circular motion around the transformation point. The angle of rotation is displayed in the Transform palette. Holding down the Shift key while rotating, constrains the rotation to multiples of 45 degrees. Using the Rotate Dialog BoxIf you would rather type in a rotation angle, and you have an unnatural aversion to the Transform palette, double-click the Rotate tool, Option/Alt-click with the tool on the page, or choose Rotate from Transform submenu (in the Object menu). This opens the Rotate dialog box (see Figure 18-2) in which you simply enter the angle of rotation (a positive number is counterclockwise, a negative number is clockwise, just like in QuarkXPress), and click OK. If you Option/Alt-click, InDesign rotates around the point where you clicked. Figure 18-2. The Rotate dialog box![]() This dialog box also offers a checkbox which determines whether a frame's content is rotated and a button that tells InDesign to perform the rotation on a copy of the object (see Chapter 21). |
