Hyphenation SettingsIf you simply want to turn hyphenation on or off in InDesign, just select your paragraphs with the Type tool or choose text frames with the Selection tool, and then check or uncheck the Hyphenation option in the Paragraph palette. However, to fine-tune the settings InDesign uses for hyphenation, choose Hyphenation from the Paragraph palette's flyout menu. With one exception, InDesign's Hyphenation dialog box mirrors the left side of XPress's Edit Hyphenation and Justification dialog box (see Figure 48-1). Figure 48-1. The Hyphenation dialog box![]() InDesign's Words Longer Than, After First, and Before Last fields match XPress's Smallest Word, Minimum Before, and Minimum After. What XPress calls Hyphens in a Row, InDesign calls Hyphen Limit. Both have a Hyphenation Zone control and an option to hyphenate capitalized words. Hypenation Penalty SliderThe new feature which InDesign introduces to control hyphenation is a hyphenation penalty slider , affectionately known internally at Adobe as "Nigel." As InDesign's composition engines work, they can use adjustments in word and letter spacing settings and hyphenation to break lines. If you move the slider to the left toward Better Spacing, the composer relies more on hyphenation and less on adjusting spacing. If you drag the slider to the right toward Fewer Hyphens, it makes more adjustments with spacing, and use fewer hyphenation break-points. Be sure to turn on the Preview checkbox so you can see the effect on your selected paragraphs.Note that Nigel works on justified, left-aligned, and right-aligned paragraphs. You can use this in left- and right-aligned text to adjust the "rag"how the right or left edge of the column flows.(Why do they call this feature Nigel? Adobe evangelist Tim Cole recalls that he asked the engineer for 11 marks on this slider, remembering that Nigel Tufnelthe guitarist in the movie Spinal Tap loved his amplifier because the volume knob went all the way to 11.) |
