  • Import Options

The options available when you place a graphic are dependent on the file format of the graphic you are placing. The import options appear in a new dialog box when the Show Import Options checkbox is turned on in the Place dialog box (or if it's off and you hold down the Shift key when clicking OK). Generally, the options you set remain in effect for that file format until you change them.

Here's a list of the primary image import options:

    • Apply Photoshop Clipping Path. When you place a TIFF or Photoshop file which contains a clipping path, turning on this option applies the clipping path automatically. If you leave this off, you can still apply the clipping path later (see Chapter 68). Note that this option is available with EPS files, too, but it will likely get you in trouble if you turn it on because it makes it appear that you can edit that clipping path in InDesign when you really can't.

    • Color Settings. There are three color management options which can be selected for individual graphicsEnable Color Management, Profile, and Rendering Intent. We discuss these in Chapter 87.

    • Read Embedded OPI Image Links. Available only for EPS files. We discuss this in Chapter 95.

    • Proxy Generation. Available only for EPS files. Select Use TIFF or PICT Preview to use the embedded preview stored in the file or choose Rasterize the PostScript to have InDesign create a preview.

    • Place PDF Options. When you choose Show Import Options for a PDF file, the Place PDF dialog box appears. You can click the arrows under the preview or type a page number to select the page of a multipage PDF. The Crop menu lets you choose how much of a PDF page to place. The Preserve Halftone Screens option overrides InDesign's settings when the PDF contains halftone screens. When the Transparent Background option is chosen, the background of a PDF containing transparency is honored; if turned off, the background is opaque.
