Importing Transparent ObjectsWith InDesign you can import transparent graphics saved as native Photoshop (.PSD), Illustrator (.AI), or Acrobat 5 PDF documents (PDF 1.4 or later). For example, you can create a cloud with wispy, feathered edges in Photoshop (fading out to Photoshop's checkerboard transparency) and when you bring it into InDesign the soft edge is retained, revealing any InDesign objects under it (see Figure 84-1). Figure 84-1. Transparent objects from Photoshop or Illustrator retain their transparency in InDesign.![]() The most reliable file formats to use for transparent imported graphics are the newest ones: Photoshop 6 or later, Illustrator 10 or later, and PDF 1.4 or later. Photoshop 6 and later can also save TIFF files with transparency (see Chapter 62). However, if you flatten an image in Photoshop, you lose all transparency (we discuss flattening in Chapter 94). |
