Keep OptionsInDesign's Keep Options dialog box helps you eliminate widows and orphans in text as well as control how paragraphs stay together. You can find these choices by choosing Keep Options on the Paragraph palette's flyout menu, or by pressing Command-Option-K/Ctrl-Alt-K (see Figure 45-4). QuarkXPress has two similar featuresKeep with Next ¶ and Keep Lines Togetherbut InDesign also adds a handy Start Paragraph feature. Notice there is also a Preview checkbox in this dialog box which is similar to XPress's Apply button. Figure 45-4. The Keep Options dialog box![]() Keep with NextThe Keep with Next option lets you specify how many lines (up to five) of the following paragraph must stay with the current paragraph. (XPress only lets you keep with one subsequent paragraph.) Usually you'll use this to keep a heading with the paragraph which follows it. Keep Lines TogetherThe Keep Lines Together feature has identical choices to those in XPress: All Lines in Paragraph and Lines At Start/End of Paragraph. By using these options you can control orphans and widows by deciding whether all lines in a paragraph are kept together, or just a couple of beginning and ending lines. Start ParagraphThe Start Paragraph menu (there's no equivalent XPress feature), you can force a paragraph to begin in the next column, frame, page, or even the next odd or even page. |
