Navigating on a PageThe faster and more fluidly you can navigate around your document, the more efficient you're going to be. Document Window NavigationInDesign displays the current page magnification in the lower-left corner of your document windowmore or less the same place as XPress displays it (see Figure 2-1). You can select from any of the preset magnification levels (in the popup menu next to the magnification setting), which range from five percent to 4000 percent. You can also enter a magnification value other than the presets; just remember to hit the Enter or Return key for your value to be accepted. Figure 2-1. The document window navigation panel![]() Zoom ToolThe Zoom tools in XPress and InDesign are very similar, even looking the same. You can quickly select the zoom tool by clicking Z on your keyboard (when the text cursor isn't active). However, just as in QuarkXPress, many people use this tool inefficiently. You can be much more productive with this tool by drawing a marquee around the objects you wish to magnify. This allows you to avoid having to click multiple times to increase the zoom level. To zoom out with this tool, hold down the Option/Alt key.You can temporarily activate the zoom tool by selecting the Command/Ctrl key and the spacebar together. You can add the Option/Alt key to this combination to reduce the magnification. Useful Key Commands for NavigatingInDesign provides you with several key commands to help you achieve the optimum page magnification. Use Command-0/Ctrl-0 (zero) to fit the current active page into your window. Be careful: InDesign sometimes thinks that you are working on a different page than you think! To be certain that the correct page will be magnified, check the page number listed in the lower left corner of the page window before using this key command. Note that Fit in Window mode in InDesign is different than in XPress; when you resize your document window in InDesign while in Fit in Window mode, the document resizes on screen, too (in XPress, you'd have to select this view mode again). Also, unlike XPress, InDesign is able to fit the active spread into the window, not just the active page. Access this via Command-Option-0/Ctrl-Alt-0 (this is Fit Pasteboard in Window in XPress). You can easily access a 100% zoom by selecting Command-1/Ctrl-1 and a 200% view by selecting Command-2/Ctrl-2. You can switch between your last two zoom levels by pressing Command-Option-2/Ctrl-Alt-2. Page Grabber HandJust like QuarkXPress and Photoshop, the Hand tool (H from your keyboard) allows you to "grab" a portion of the page and move your view by dragging the page within the document window. If you don't use this tool you are missing out on one of the most efficient ways to move around a document page because it lets you move both vertically and horizontally at the same time. So say goodbye to your scroll bars and hello to the hand tool! You can temporarily activate this tool while you are using another tool by holding down the spacebar (unless you are entering type, of course). When editing type, use the Option/Alt key to temporarily access this tool. |
