Fractions

In QuarkXPress, there are several ways to work with fractionsnone of them pretty. You can fake fractions using character styles or with the Type Tricks XTension, but the results are usually spindly and of only marginal quality. You can use expert set or other specialized fonts which include true fraction characters, but this is time-intensive.

InDesign has no macro like the Type Tricks XTension, so making fractions with non-OpenType fonts is a hassle. (You can use the Superscript and Subscript styles and the fraction-bar character, or use specialized fonts.) However, many OpenType fonts support some pre-built fractions, and some (mostly the Pro fonts) even support the creation of any arbitrary fraction (like 355/113). To use this feature, select any two numbers separated by a slash characterfor example, 3/4then select Fractions from the OpenType menu on the Character palette. The fractions will be correctly built using numerator and denominator characters included in the font.
