Building a Book
Just like XPress, you create books by choosing Book from the New submenu (under the File menu). This opens a Book palette, into which you can then add individual InDesign files by using the Add Document command from the flyout menu or clicking the plus icon at the bottom of the palette. You can also drag InDesign files from the Finder (Macintosh) or Explorer (Windows) into the palette.The Book palette (and the accompanying book file on disk) just stores references to the InDesign files that you add; the documents aren't embedded into the book file. Because of this you will always need to keep both the book file and the original InDesign documents. While they do not need to be stored in the same folder, they need to be accessible to each othersuch as on the same network or on the same computer.
