Unicode Mapping Problems While InDesign's support for Unicode encoding and OpenType fonts is generally a good thing, you should be aware of one little glitch which you may run into you. In QuarkXPress, you expect that you can type characters which represent keyboard positions (for example, the letters a, b and c), and when you select those characters and switch the font to a pi font (like Symbol or Zapf Dingbats), the characters in those same keyboard positions will be called out.In InDesign, it doesn't work this wayat least not by default. As far as InDesign is concerned, the letter "a" is Unicode 0061 (which you can see in the Glyphs palette if you pause the cursor over the glyph), and the Greek "alpha" glyph is Unicode 03B1. So when you select the letter "a," and change the font to Symbol, what you see is a pink blotchmeaning the font is missing! So what's the solution? You have two options: If you hold down Command-Option/Ctrl-Alt when selecting the new font, InDesign handles the switch the way you expect and overrides the Unicode mapping. Or, you can select the pink splotch, and just retype the characters again.
