Exporting PDF

You can export one or more pages to an Adobe PDF file by selecting Export from the File menu and choosing Adobe PDF from the Formats popup menu. After you name the file and tell InDesign where to save it, InDesign displays the Export PDF dialog box. The program ships with four built-in settings for PDF files, which you can choose from the Style popup menu (see Figure 99-1).

Figure 99-1. Preset styles in the Export PDF dialog box

  • eBook. Use this setting for PDF files that will be displayed on screen but may also need to be printed. It is a hybrid between the Screen and Print settings.

  • Screen. Use this to create the smallest PDF files where a small file size is more important than image quality.

  • Print. Use this for general office use, when files will be printed on inkjet or laser printers around your office.

  • Press. Use this to create high quality PDF files that will be sent to your commercial printer for output using various printing methods, including color separations.

These four default settings will likely meet most of your needs. However, you can always override these settings by changing the options in each of the panels of the Export PDF dialog boxfor instance, if you work extensively with spot colors or want password permissions for your PDF files. We discuss the various PDF options below.
