Adding or Removing Words

InDesign handles dictionaries for spell checking and hyphenation differently than QuarkXPress. In XPress, you can't add or change words in its standard dictionary. Instead, you must first create or open an auxiliary dictionary. Then, when spell-checking, XPress uses both dictionaries. To change the way QuarkXPress hyphenates words, you can enter words in its Hyphenation Exceptions dialog box; this information is stored in the XPress Preferences file and is applied globally to all documents.

In InDesign, you add or remove words using the Dictionary dialog box (see Chapter 41). If you have a word selected in your text or the Check Spelling dialog box, it appears in the Word fieldor you can just type one in. Then fill out the other settings in the Dictionary dialog box:

  • Choose a language dictionary from the Language popup menu.

  • When you add or remove words in a dictionary, InDesign actually adds the word to one of two lists: the Added Words exception list and the Removed Words exception list. For example, words added in the English (USA) language are stored in the ENG.UDC file. Select either Added Words or Removed Words from the Dictionary List popup menu.

  • To change where the added or removed word is stored, use the Target popup menu. The default is the external user dictionary, but you can select any currently open document instead. The advantage of storing in the document is that this makes the change transportable. The advantage of storing exceptions outside the document is that you can use them with multiple documents.

  • Finally, click the Add button to add the word to the exception list.

Hyphenation Points

You can examine InDesign's hyphenation break-points for a word, or change them if you like. In the Dictionary dialog box, when there is a word in the Word field, click Hyphenate to see that word's default hyphenation. InDesign's dictionaries rank syllable breaks for desirability. You can change these hyphenation points:

  • Type one tilde (~) to indicate the best (or only) hyphenation point.

  • Type two tildes (~~) for your second choice point.

  • If necessary, type three tildes (~~~) for your last choice point.

  • To prevent hyphenation, type a tilde before the first letter.

When you're finished editing your added words, click Done.

Removing Words

To remove a word from one of the exceptions lists, choose Dictionary from the Edit menu. In the Target menu, choose the dictionary (external or document) from which you want to remove a word. Choose whether you want to modify the list of Added Words or Removed Words in the Dictionary List menu. In the word list, select the word and click Remove. When you're finished editing the lists, click Done.
