Tagged Text Export Options You can export text in the InDesign Tagged Text format by selecting a text story (or a portion of the story), choosing Export from the File menu, and selecting Adobe InDesign Tagged Text from the Formats popup menu. InDesign then offers you a choice of how the text of the story and the tags should be saved to disk (see Figure 60-2).
Figure 60-2. InDesign Tagged Text options

- Verbose writes the tags in a longer form. For example, <StrokeColor:Red> as opposed to the Abbreviated option which would write <sc:Red>. If a human will be reading or editing the tags, you should export using Verbose.
- ASCII is used for most PC systems and is the most common format for representing English characters.
- ANSI includes the ASCII characters and also special punctuation marks and symbols that are not included with the ASCII character set. The Macintosh operating system typically writes text using the ANSI format for plain text.
- Unicode can describe a much larger character set, including thousands of different glyphs, supporting non-European languages.
- Shift-JIS is used for Japanese characters that are to be represented as plain text.
