Finding/Changing Formatted TextMany people don't realize you can search for or change text attributes in XPress because you have to first turn off the Ignore Attributes checkbox in the Find/Change palette. When you do so, XPress allows you to find/replace style sheets, or the font name, font size, font color, and character-level Type Style formatting.Similarly, to find or change formatted text in InDesign, click the More Options button in the Find/Change dialog box. InDesign now presents the expanded form of the dialog box showing its Format controls (see Figure 52-2). You can then click the Format buttons to choose the formatting you wish to find or replace. On the left side of this dialog box, select a type of formatting, and then specify the attributes which you want to find/change. InDesign's choices are considerably more extensive than in XPress: You can Find/Change style sheets, basic and advanced character attributes, indents, spacing, keep options, drop caps, composer, character color, and OpenType features. (You can't Find/Change paragraph rules, tabs, or H&J settings.) Figure 52-3. The Change Format Settings dialog box![]() As in QuarkXPress, formatting attributes in this dialog box can have one of three stateson, off, or ignorerepresenting whether the search is finding or changing text with or without this attribute, or whether this attribute is to be ignored. In Figure 52-3, text is being changed to include the Underline attribute (it is checked), the Strikethrough attribute is being removed (it is unchecked), and the other attributes are being ignored (they either show a line through the checkbox or they show a field or menu which is empty). Applying FormattingAfter making choices for finding or changing formatting in the dialog box, click OK. When you return to the Find/Change dialog box, the formatting you've specified is listed in the Find Format Settings and Change Format Settings sections. When you are satisfied with your choices, use the Find Next, Change, Change/Find or Change All buttons as described above. While XPress cannot undo a search and replace, InDesign can: choose Undo from the Edit menu or press Command-Z/Ctrl-Z. One common mistake is to inadvertantly leave formatting attributes from a previous search. InDesign helps you recognize that formatting is being searched for or replaced by placing a yellow Formatting Alert icon next to the field where formatting is designated. To clear the formatting, press Clear. Using Wild Cards to Apply Word UnderliningTo show you the power of the Find/Change dialog box, we'll show you how to use it to apply word underlining. This is a character attribute found in QuarkXPress, but not in InDesign. However, with three simple steps, you can apply it in InDesign: |
