Chapter 43. Think Outside the Box: InDesign and Fonts
When it comes to fonts, QuarkXPress goes strictly by the book: It totally relies on your operating system for font selection and display. However, by sticking to that conservative approach, QuarkXPress users can't take advantage of recent advances in font technology. Furthermore, this approach means that there are differences between the way XPress handles fonts cross-platform. For instance, you can only access 256 characters from a font, and not the same ones on each platform. (Did you know that fonts often have more than 256 characters in them? Neither did we until we started using InDesign.)Adobe applicationsincluding InDesignmarch to a different drummer. They share a core font technology called CoolType. This technology works with the Adobe Graphics Manager to rasterize PostScript and TrueType fonts for the screen and printers. Fonts render at high quality, even when highly magnified, without relying on the operating system or extensions like Adobe Type Manager (ATM). CoolType also creates InDesign's font menus and determines the characters (glyphs) which can be displayed. Adobe's approach applies cross-platform consistency to its font display and opens InDesign up to some important new font features.
