Chapter 68. Clipping Paths

Clipping paths are PostScript (Bézier) paths that clip out a portion of an image. Clipping paths have long been the primary way to create "transparency" effects in QuarkXPress, but there are two problems with clipping paths. First, they can take a long time to create. Second, they always have very sharp edges (part of the image is either in the path or outside of it). Because InDesign can now read image transparency, you may not have to take the time to draw a clipping path; also, the transparency features support soft edges.

Nevertheless, you may still need to deal with a clipping path from time to time, so we'd better explain how InDesign handles them. In short, InDesign deals with clipping paths almost exactly the way XPress does. (Of course, InDesign also adds a few fun options not available in XPress, too.)
