Chapter 87. Color Management

Very few people use QuarkXPress's color management system (the QuarkCMS XTension), instead managing the color of bitmapped images in Photoshop and then just assuming that what they see on screen in XPress may or may not be anything similar to what they're going to get on press. In our experience, managing color is easier and more practical in InDesign, partly because the controls are almost identical to those in Photoshop and Illustrator.

If you're not familiar with color management, you should understand that color management is not the same as color correction. Color management helps keep colors more consistent among each device you useincluding scanners, monitors and various printers. Like XPress, InDesign relies on industry-standard International Color Consortium (ICC) profiles to convert colors. Both XPress and InDesign allow control over color management at the document level and for individual objects.

If you're looking for an in-depth analysis of InDesign's color management, including how it works with other software, we provide additional resources at the end of this chapter.
