Chapter 16. Compound Paths QuarkXPress' Merge features can combine shapes into a compound path a shape made up of two or more subpaths , which usually contains holes when one subpath is contained within another. For instance, when you convert text to outlines, you get a compound path made of individual paths (letter shapes). While InDesign doesn't have Merge commands yet, it does give you the same ability to create frames with holes. In fact, it has controls over creating and releasing compound paths identical to those you find in Adobe Illustrator.
