Chapter 1. The Tools Palette

Many QuarkXPress users are also Adobe Illustrator users, which makes the job of learning the InDesign tools much more simple. InDesign borrows heavily from the Illustrator tool box, so you will see a great many familar tools if you are an Illustrator user. But don't skip over this chapter just because you know the Illustrator tools. There are some subtle but important differences between the two software programs.

You can position InDesign's Tools palette in the traditional two columns, a single vertical column or horizontally as a single row (see Figure 1-1). Laptop users or those working on smaller screens will appreciate the single row or column that is a more efficient use of space. To change the palette layout, click the maximize window button at the top of the palette. This rotates you through the various view options. You can also set the layout of the tools in the General section of InDesign's preferences. If you accidentially close the tools palette, you can easily re-open the palette by selecting Tools from the Window menu.

Unlike XPress, each tool has a key command associated with it (see Figure 1-2). As long as you are not entering or editing text, you can use the key commands to move from one tool to another. Plus, you can press the Tab key to show or hide all palettes. Use Shift-Tab to show or hide all palettes except the Tools palette.
