Chapter 23. Making Objects Non-printing

You can make objects non-printing (that is, they appear on screen but don't print out) in XPress by turning on the Suppress Printout checkbox in the Modify dialog box. InDesign lets you do this, too, but because the feature is somewhat hidden, many people don't even know the feature exists. There are many reasons you might want non-printing objects in your document. For instance, you might want to add a note you want someone else handling the document to see, but which you don't want to appear when you print out the page that it's on.

To make an object non-printing in InDesign, open the Attributes palette (from the Window menu), select the object, and turn on the Nonprinting checkbox (see Figure 23-1).

InDesign has two advantages and two disadvantages compared to how QuarkXPress handles non-printing objects. In InDesign, you can override the non-printing feature in the Print dialog box. In XPress, if you wanted to print everything on the page you'd have to change all the non-printing objects manually. InDesign also lets you preview the non-printing status of objects by selecting the Preview mode button on the Tools palette, or pressing W (when you don't have a text insertion point). Non-printing objects disappear in the preview.

On the other hand, QuarkXPress lets you suppress the printing of individual pictures, while still allowing their frames to print. InDesign can only do this globally to all pictures in the Print dialog box: Select None from the Images menu on the Graphics panel (see Chapter 95).

XPress also lets you turn on Suppress Printout for every object on a layer. To accomplish this in InDesign, Option/Alt-click on the layer in the Layers palette (to select all the objects on that layer) and then turn on or off the Nonprinting checkbox in the Attributes palette.
