Chapter 24. Layers

You may be familiar with using layers in Illustrator, Freehand, or Photoshop. QuarkXPress 5 and InDesign both let you work with layers, but the feature is missing from QuarkXPress 3 and 4. Artwork can be placed on different layers, and the layers can be shown or hidden, locked or unlocked, rearranged in the stacking order, and so on. Layers are particularly useful when creating multiple versions of a layout, or when you want to isolate elements like graphics and text in a complex layout.

It's important to realize that InDesign's layers (and XPress's) are document-wide, so changing a layer applies to all the pages in your document.

Both QuarkXPress 5 and InDesign control layers with a Layers palette (see Figure 24-1). The palettes in each application look and work in many similar ways, but there are important differences as well; notably, where InDesign's Layers palette has commands in a flyout palette menu, XPress offers controls in a context menu.
