Chapter 26. Creating New Documents

One of the easiest parts of switching to InDesign is starting a new document. The process is about the same as it is in QuarkXPress, with only minor variations. In fact, when you first look at InDesign's New Document dialog box you might think that you're just in a newer version of QuarkXPress. In the New Document dialog box (see Figure 26-1), you can define the following.

Figure 26-1. The New Document dialog box

  • Number of Pages. You can enter your final document size here or your can add pages later (we cover this in Chapter 28), up to 9,999 pages long.

  • Facing Pages and Orientation. As in QuarkXPress, determine whether your document will use left-and-right-page spreads and whether it should be created in either portrait or landscape mode.

  • Master Text Frame. This option is similar to the Automatic Text Box option in XPress's New Document dialog box. It creates a default text frame within the margins of the default master page, so that you can flow text from page to page without making a text frame first.

  • Page Size. Use any of the preset page sizes from the popup menu or type in a custom size, ranging from a minimum size of 1/6-inch per side to a maximum size of 18-feet per side.

  • Margins. Enter the distance from the page edge where these nonprinting page guides should appear.

  • Columns. As with XPress, you can enter the number of columns and the gutter (the space between the columns), which can be overridden on either document or master pages.

Here's a feature you won't find in QuarkXPress: You can bypass this dialog box by typing Command-Option-N/Ctrl-Alt-N. In this case, InDesign uses the default document settings (see Chapter 7).
